Our Heywood Men’s Lab welcomed poet and performer Tom Stocks, also known as The Chubby Northerner, for a creative poetry workshop at Sandon House Community Centre.

At the beginning of the session, some members were unsure about writing poetry. However, with Tom’s positive encouragement, practical advice and a few useful tips, the group quickly began exploring their ideas and discovering the power of spoken word.

The relaxed and supportive atmosphere helped everyone feel comfortable expressing themselves. Before long, our poetry sceptics had become confident bards, creating their own original pieces and sharing their words with the group.

Some of the spoken-word pieces created during the workshop were prepared for the Great Heywood Gathering, organised by Culture Co-op. This gave participants an exciting opportunity to contribute to a wider local celebration of creativity, culture and community.

The workshop was about much more than writing poetry. It encouraged confidence, self-expression and connection, while giving members the chance to try something new in a welcoming environment.

A huge thank you to Tom for delivering such an inspiring session and to Culture Co-op for creating opportunities to celebrate local voices and talent.
