NA railway station may not be the first place that comes to mind when thinking about an art class—but for four wonderful weeks, Rochdale railway station’s community garden became a place filled with creativity, colour and connection.
Working in partnership with the Calder Valley Line Community Rail Partnership, New Pioneers Project participants took part in a series of outdoor painting sessions led by the wonderful Omur Keskin.
With Omur’s friendly guidance and encouragement, participants learned new painting techniques, explored different creative ideas and produced their own individual pieces of art. The welcoming atmosphere gave everyone the confidence to experiment, express themselves and enjoy learning something new.
The unusual setting made the sessions even more special. Passengers travelling through the station often stopped to look at the artwork, sharing smiles and showing interest in what the group was creating.
The project demonstrated how ordinary public spaces can be transformed into welcoming places where people can learn, connect and discover new talents. Creative activities can also support wellbeing by helping people relax, build confidence and enjoy meaningful time with others.
A huge well done to all our artists for their creativity and enthusiasm. We would also like to thank Omur Keskin for leading the sessions and the Calder Valley Line Community Rail Partnership for working with us to make this inspiring project possible.
Rochdale railway station’s community garden proved that creativity can flourish almost anywhere—even beside the railway tracks!
